Try Using Food to Boost Your Mood

In general, people have been taught to think that “comfort” foods are not good for the body and should be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is basically candy or other junk foods, this holds true. Other times, comfort foods can be very healthy and good for us to eat. There are several foods that, when you consume them, may better your mood. If you feel a little bit down and need a happiness pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, are fantastic for helping you battle depression. You must be sure, however, that what you make includes the yolk. Whenever you want to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most crucial part of the egg. Eggs, specifically the yolks, are rich in B vitamins. These B vitamins are wonderful for helping to boost your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–run better. Try consuming a few eggs to feel better!

Put together some trail mix of nuts or seeds. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etc are all great for helping to raise your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have plenty of magnesium which raises your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical that tells the brain how to feel at any given moment. The more of this chemical in your brain, the better you’ll feel. Not only that, nuts, specifically, are a fantastic source of protein.

Cold water fish are good if you wish to feel better. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, etc, they’re all loaded with omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that actually help the grey matter in your brain work a lot better. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can greatly elevate your mood.

Some grains are truly great for fighting off bad moods. Millet, quinoa, barley, etc are fantastic at helping you feel better. These foods can help you feel full for longer too, which can help your mood too. Feeling famished can truly make you feel awful! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are easy for your body to digest. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps raise your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, elevates your mood.

Green tea is wonderful for moods. You were sure it had to be mentioned in this article, right? Green tea is high in a certain amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid basically induces brain waves. This helps raise your mental acuity while having a relaxing effect on the rest of your body. You likely already knew it is not hard to be healthy when you consume green tea. And now you know it can help raise your mood also!

So you see, you don’t have to turn to junk food or foods that are bad for you to feel better! Try a couple of of these tips instead.
