Turn to Food to Elevate Your Mood
In general, people have been conditioned to believe that “comfort” foods are not good for the body and should be avoided. But if your comfort food is candy or junk food this can be true. Otherwise, comfort foods can be extremely nutritious and good for you. There are a number of foods that basically can raise your moods when you eat them. When you are feeling a little down and need an emotional pick-me-up, try a couple of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly great at beating back depression. You should see to it, though, that what you make includes the egg yolk. Whenever you wish to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most crucial part of the egg. Eggs, the egg yolks particularly, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can truly help you boost your mood. This is because the B vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that affect how you feel). Consume an egg and feel better!
Make a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etc are all great for helping to elevate your mood. This is because these foods are high in magnesium, which helps to raise serotonin levels. Serotonin is referred to as the “feel good” chemical and it tells your brain how you should be feeling day in and day out. The more of this chemical in your brain, the better you’ll feel. Not only that, nuts, specifically, are a terrific source of protein.
Cold water fish are excellent for eating if you want to beat back depression. Cold water fish such as tuna, trout and wild salmon are rich in DHA and omega-3s. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can earnestly elevate your mood.
Grains can be great for driving away a terrible mood. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all really excellent for helping boost your happiness levels. These grains can help you feel full for longer also, which can help your mood too. It’s not difficult to feel a little bit off when you are starving! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are easy for your body to digest and process. You digest these grains faster than other things which can help increase your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel better, mood wise.
Green tea is excellent for moods. You knew it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea has been found to be packed full of an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid basically stimulates brain waves. This helps improve your mental acuity while relaxing the rest of your body. You were already aware that green tea could help you feel better. Now you know that applies to your mood too!
So you see, you don’t need to stuff your face with junk food when you want to feel better! Test out these suggestions instead!
