Turn to Food to Boost Your Mood

In general, people have been taught to think that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and have to be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is a sugary food or another junk food, this is true. Otherwise, comfort foods can be very nourishing and good for you. Some foods actually do raise your mood when you eat them. When you are feeling a little down and are in need of an emotional pick-me-up, test out a couple of these.

Eggs, you may be amazed to learn, are terrific at combating depression. Just see to it that you don’t throw away the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, the yolk particularly, are high in B vitamins. B vitamins can really help you elevate your mood. This is because these vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that tell you how to feel). Try eating a few eggs to feel better!

Put together a trail mixfrom various seeds and nuts. Your mood can be improved by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, and so on. This is because these foods are loaded with magnesium, which helps to increase serotonin production. Serotonin is referred to as the “feel good” chemical substance and it tells your brain how you should be feeling day in and day out. The more of this chemical in your brain, the happier you’ll feel. Nuts, along with raising your mood, can be a great source of protein.

If you would like to defeat depression, try eating some cold water fish. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, and so on, they’re all high in omega-3s and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that really help the grey matter in your brain run a lot better. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight back depression.

It’s not hard to drive away your bad mood when you eat grains. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all truly excellent for helping raise your happiness levels. They fill you up better and that can help elevate your moods too. Feeling famished can be terrible! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are not hard for your stomach to digest. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps promote a rise in your sugar levels which in turn brings up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is really great for your mood. You were just waiting to read that in this article, weren’t you? Green tea is loaded with a specific amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid essentially stimulates brain waves. This helps improve your mental sharpness while having a relaxing effect on the rest of your body. You were already aware that that green tea helps you become better. Now you know it can help improve your mood as well!

Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Try a few of these tips instead.
