How to Improve Your Mood with Food

Many of us have been trained to believe that comfort foods are bad and are to be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is a sugary food or some other junk food, this is true. Soemtimes, comfort foods can be very nutritious and good for us to eat. There are several foods that actually can boost your moods when you consume them. If you seem to be a little bit down and you’re needing an emotional pick me up, try several of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be really wonderful at fighting back depression. Just make sure that you do not throw out the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the most essential part of the egg iwhen it comes to helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the egg yolk particularly, are stuffed full of B vitamins. B vitamins can truly help you elevate your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–work better. Try to eat an egg and feel a lot happier!

Make a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all wonderful for raising your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have lots of magnesium which increases your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that directs your brain how you feel day in and day out. The more serotonin you have, the happier you are going to feel. Not just that, nuts, particularly, are a great source of protein.

If you want to defeat depression, try eating some cold water fish. Cold water fish such as tuna, trout and wild salmon are chock full of DHA and omega-3s. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that raise the quality and the function of your brain’s gray matter. It’s the truth: eating tuna fish sandwiches can truly help you battle your depression.

Some grains are really excellent for fighting off bad moods. Quinoa, barley, millet, etc are great at helping you be happier. They help you feel full as well which can truly help to make your mood better. It’s not difficult to feel low when you are starving! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are not difficult for your body to digest and process. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps kick up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, raises your mood.

Green tea is wonderful for moods. You just knew green tea had to be in this article somewhere, right? Green tea is found to be packed full of an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies prove that this specific amino acid can essentially induce brain waves. This helps sharpen your mental energy while at the same time relaxing the rest of your body. You were already aware that that green tea helps you become better. Now you know that green tea can elevate your mood too!

So you see, you don’t have to turn to junk food or foods that are not good for you just so to feel better! Try a few of these instead!
