Use Food to Elevate Your Mood

A lot of us think that comfort foods are terrible for us and that we ought to stay away from them. Often, if your comfort food is essentially candy or other junk foods, this holds true. At times, comfort foods can be perfectly healthy and good for us to eat. There are several foods that really can raise your moods when you eat them. If you are feeling a little bit down and you need an emotional pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, would you believe, are fantastic for helping you fight depression. Just make sure that you do not throw out the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the yolks in particular, are loaded with B vitamins. B vitamins can genuinely help you improve your mood. This is because they increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Try consuming a few eggs to jolly up!

Make several trail mix of nuts or seeds. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all wonderful for improving your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have lots of magnesium which raises your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that directs your brain how you feel at all times. The more of it in your brain, the better you’ll feel. Nuts, on top of bettering your mood, can be a great source of protein.

Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you wish to battle depression. Tuna, trout, mackerel, herring and wild salmon are all full of omega-3s and DHA. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can greatly elevate your mood.

Grains can be good for overcoming a bad mood. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all good for helping you feel better. They help you feel full also which can really help to improve your mood. Feeling famished can be awful! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are easy for your stomach to digest. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.

Green tea is actually excellent for your mood. You were sure green tea had to be included in this article, right? Green tea is rich in a particular amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Research has found that this amino acid stimulates the production of brain waves. This helps sharpen your mental energy while at the same time making the rest of your body more relaxed. You likely already knew how easy it is to get healthy when you consume green tea. Now you know that green tea can improve your mood too!

Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you have to eat when you are wanting to help your moods get better. Try these tips instead!
