Try Using Food to Elevate Your Mood

In general, people have been conditioned to believe that “comfort” foods are terrible for the body and need to be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is essentially candy or other junk foods, this holds true. Soemtimes, comfort foods can be perfectly healthy and good for us to consume. There are several foods that, when you consume them, can better your mood. When you are feeling a little down and are in need of an emotional boost, test out a few of these.

Eggs, would you believe, are great for helping you battle depression. Just be sure that you do not throw out the egg yolk. Every time you want to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most important part of the egg. Eggs, the yolk in particular, are stuffed full of B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be fantastic for raising your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–function better. Try eating a few eggs to cheer up!

Make a trail mixfrom a variety of seeds and nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all good for elevating your mood. This is possible as these foods are high in magnesium which boosts your production of serotonin. Serotonin is called the “feel good” chemical and it tells your brain how you should be feeling day in and day out. The more you have of it, the better you will feel. Nuts, on top of improving your mood, can be a great protein source.

Cold water fish are excellent if you would like to feel happier. Cold water fish like tuna, trout and wild salmon are rich in DHA and omega-3 fats. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain work a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can seriously boost your mood.

Grains can be great for overcoming a bad mood. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all truly great for helping increase your happiness levels. They can help you feel full for longer too, which is a mood improver. Feeling hungry can really bring you down! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are easy for your body to digest. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, elevates your mood.

Green tea is excellent for moods. You knew green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea has been found to be chock-full of an amino acid called L-theanine. Research has proved that this amino acid stimulates the production of brain waves. This helps improve your mental energy while at the same time making the rest of your body more relaxed. You knew green tea could help you become so much healthier. Now you know that green tea can improve your mood too!

As you can see, you don’t need to eat junk food or foods that are not good for you to feel better! Try a few of these suggestions instead.
