Foods That Make You Happy

Most of us have been conditioned to believe that comfort foods are not good and to be avoided. However, if your comfort food is candy or junk food this might be true. Otherwise, comfort foods can be extremely nourishing and good for you. Several foods actually do boost your mood when you consume them. If you feel a little bit down and you need an emotional pick me up, try several of these.

Eggs, you may be astonished to learn, are fantastic at fighting depression. Just be sure that you do not toss the egg yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, the egg yolk in particular, are rich in B vitamins. These B vitamins are wonderful for helping to raise your mood. This is because they help improve the function of your neural transmitters, the components of your brain that control your mood. Try consuming a couple of eggs to jolly up!

Build a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all wonderful for improving your mood. This is possible since these foods are high in magnesium which boosts your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that dictates to your brain how you feel at all times. The more of this chemical in your brain, the better you’ll feel. Not just that but nuts, in particular, are a great protein food source.

Cold water fish are excellent for eating if you are wanting to fight depression. Tuna, trout, mackerel, herring and wild salmon are all rich in omega-3 fats and DHA. These are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain run a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can earnestly elevate your mood.

It’s not difficult to overcome your bad mood when you eat grains. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are excellent at helping you be happier. They help you feel full too which can actually help to better your mood. Feeling starved can be a real downer! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are not hard to digest. You digest them faster than other foods which can help increase your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel happier, mood wise.

Green tea is fantastic for moods. You knew green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is chock-full of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have found that this specific amino acid can actually stimulate brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while at the same time making the rest of your body more relaxed. You were already aware that green tea could help you feel better. And now you know green tea can help improve your mood too!

Now you realize that junk food isn’t necessarily what you have to eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Try a few of these hints instead.
