Learn How to Improve Your Mood with Food

For the most part, people have been conditioned to think that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and should be avoided. At times, if your comfort food is made of candy or other junk foods, this can be true. Otherwise, comfort foods may be super nourishing and good for you. There are several foods that, when you eat them, could improve your mood. If you feel a little bit down and in need of an emotional pick me up, try several of these.

Eggs, would you believe, are wonderful for helping you battle depression. Just see to it that you don’t throw away the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, specifically the egg yolks, are full of B vitamins. These B vitamins are great for helping to elevate your mood. This is because they improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Try to eat an egg and feel a lot better!

Put together a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Your mood can be improved by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. This is because seeds and nuts have a lot of magnesium which increases your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that dictates to your brain how you feel all the time. The more serotonin you have, the better you will feel. Not just that, nuts, specifically, are a terrific protein food source.

If you would like to fight depression, you should eat some cold water fish. Salmon, herring, tuna fish, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all high in omega-3s and DHA. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you fight back depression.

Grains can be good for overcoming a bad mood. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all really excellent for helping boost your happiness levels. They help you feel full too which can actually help to make your mood better. Feeling famished can be terrible! The reason these grains elevate your mood is that they are easy to digest. You digest these grains faster than other things which can help promote your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel happier, mood wise.

Your mood can really be helped by green tea. You knew green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is high in a certain amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have discovered that this amino acid actually induces brain waves. This helps better your mental acuity while calming the rest of your body. You knew green tea could help you be better. Now you know that applies to your mood too!

Now you can see that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Try some of these instead!
