Information on How to Improve Your Mood with Food
Many of us think that comfort foods are not good for us and that we need to stay away from them. Often, if the comfort food is a high sugar food or some other junk food, this is true. Otherwise, comfort foods can be super healthy and good for you. There are a number of foods that basically can boost your moods when you eat them. If you seem to feel a little bit down and need a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.
Eggs, you might be amazed to discover, are wonderful at battling depression. Just make sure that you don’t get rid of the egg yolk. Every time you wish to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most important part of the egg. Eggs, specifically the egg yolks, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can genuinely help you boost your mood. This is because these vitamins improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that tell you how to feel). Eat an egg and jolly up!
Build a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be elevated by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera. This is because seeds and nuts have plenty of magnesium which raises your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical substance that dictates to the brain how to feel at any given point in time. The more of it in your brain, the more pleasant you’ll feel. Nuts, in addition to bettering your mood, can be a super protein source.
Cold water fish are great if you wish to feel better. Tuna, trout, mackerel, herring and wild salmon are all rich in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you overcome depression.
It’s not difficult to fight your bad mood when you are eating grains. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all good for helping you feel better. They help you feel full too which can truly help to make your mood better. It’s not hard to feel depressed when you are starving! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are easy for your stomach to digest. You digest these grains more quickly than other foods which can help boost your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel better, mood wise.
Green tea is truly excellent for your mood. You knew green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is found to be chock-full of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have found that this amino acid actually stimulates brain waves. This helps sharpen your mental energy while at the same time calming your body.
