How to Boost Your Mood with Food
Most of us think that comfort foods are terrible for us and that we have to avoid them. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this holds true. Otherwise, comfort foods could be extremely nutritious and good for you. Several foods really do raise your mood when you eat them. When you are feeling a little down and are needing an emotional boost, test out a couple of these.
Eggs, would you believe, are wonderful for helping you combat depression. Just see to it that you do not throw away the egg yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, especially the yolks, are loaded with B vitamins. B vitamins can be terrific for elevating your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–run better. Eat an egg and feel a lot happier!
Make a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etc are all great for helping to raise your mood. This is possible since these foods are rich in magnesium which raises your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that dictates to your brain how you feel all the time. The more serotonin you have, the more pleasant you are going to feel. Nuts, in addition to elevating your mood, can be a great source of protein.
If you want to battle depression, you should eat some cold water fish. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, and so on, they’re all chock-full of omega-3s and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that actually help the grey matter in your brain function a lot better. It’s the truth: eating tuna fish sandwiches can really help you overcome your depression.
Some grains are really wonderful for repelling bad moods. Teff, barley, millet, quinoa, etc are all great for helping you feel happier. They fill you up better and that can help improve your moods also. Feeling hungry can be a real downer! These grains can improve your mood as it’s not at all difficult for your body to digest them. You digest these grains quicker than other foods which can help increase your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel happier, mood wise.
Green tea is really excellent for your mood. You were sure green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is rich in a certain amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid essentially induces brain waves. This helps sharpen your mental energy while simultaneously relaxing the rest of your body. You likely already knew it is not difficult to get healthy when you drink green tea. Now you know that green tea can improve your mood too!
Now you know that junk food isn’t necessarily what you should eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Try some of these instead!
