Try Using Food to Elevate Your Mood

Many of us have been trained to believe that comfort foods are not good and should be avoided. But if your comfort food is candy or junk food this is true. Otherwise, comfort foods can be really healthy and good for you. There are some foods that really can improve your moods when you eat them. If you seem to feel a little bit down and need a happiness pick me up, try a few of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, are great for helping you battle depression. You should see to it, however, that what you make includes the yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, the yolks in particular, are loaded with B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be fantastic for elevating your mood. This is because these vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Try to eat an egg and feel happier!

Put together a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, and so on are all great for helping to raise your mood. This is possible because these foods have a bunch of magnesium which raises serotonin production. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical substance that tells the brain how to feel at any given moment. The more serotonin you have, the better you are going to feel. Nuts, on top of elevating your mood, can be a superb protein source.

Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you are wanting to beat back depression. Wild salmon, herring, mackerel, trout, and tuna are all full of omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. DHA and omega-3s are two things that raise the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can greatly elevate your mood.

Some grains are truly great for driving away bad moods. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all excellent for helping you be in a happier state of mind. These grains fill you up better and that can help elevate your moods too. Feeling famished can be a real downer! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are not hard for your body to digest. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps raise your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.

Green tea is fantastic for moods. You were simply waiting to read that, weren’t you? Green tea is loaded with a specific amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have found that this amino acid basically induces brain waves. This helps better your mental acuity while calming the rest of your body. You probably already knew it is not hard to get healthy when you consume green tea. Now you know that applies to your mood also!

As you can see, you don’t have to turn to junk food or foods that are not good for you so you can feel better! Go with these tips instead!
