How to Boost Your Mood with Food

A lot of us believe that comfort foods are not good for us and that we should stay away from them. Often, if your comfort food is basically candy or other junk foods, this can be true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be altogether healthy and it’s good for you to consume them. There are some foods that, when you eat them, may boost your mood. If you seem to feel a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, are great for helping you battle depression. You should see to it, though, that what you make includes the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, the egg yolk in particular, are high in B vitamins. B vitamins can be great for raising your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–run better. Try to eat an egg and feel better!

Build a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, and so on are all great for helping to boost your mood. This is because these nuts are rich in magnesium, which helps to increase your production of serotonin. Serotonin is called the “feel good” substance that our body produces and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The more you have of it, the more pleasant you will feel. Not only that, nuts, particularly, are a fantastic protein food source.

Cold water fish are wonderful for eating if you wish to beat back depression. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, and so on, they’re all loaded with omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s the truth: eating tuna fish sandwiches can really help you fight your depression.

Some grains are truly great for driving away bad moods. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are excellent at helping you feel happier. These grains fill you up better and that can help elevate your moods as well. It’s not difficult to feel low when you are starving! These grains can help your mood elevate since it’s not at all hard for your body to digest them. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps promote a rise in your blood sugar which in turn takes your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is excellent for moods. You knew green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is rich in an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have found that this specific amino acid can essentially stimulate brain waves. This will improve your brain’s concentration while also relaxing the rest of your body. You knew green tea could help you become so much healthier. Now you know that it helps you to raise your moods as well!

Now you realize that junk food isn’t necessarily what you have to eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Try a few of these instead!
