Use Food to Elevate Your Mood

A lot of us believe that comfort foods are terrible for us and that we should avoid them. Sometimes, if your comfort food is basically candy or other junk foods, this holds true. Otherwise, comfort foods could be very nutritious and good for you. Some foods actually do boost your mood when you eat them. When you are feeling a little down and are in need of an emotional boost, test out a couple of these.

Eggs, you may be surprised to find out, are great at combating depression. Just see to it that you don’t throw away the egg yolk. Every time you wish to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most crucial part of the egg. Eggs, specifically the yolks, are loaded with B vitamins. B vitamins can be terrific for raising your mood. This is because they help in bettering the function of your neural transmitters, the components of your brain that dictate your mood. Try eating a few eggs to cheer up!

Put together a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all helpful for elevating your mood. This is possible since these foods are rich in magnesium which boosts your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that tells your brain how you feel day in and day out. The higher your serotonin levels, the more pleasant you will feel. Not only that but nuts, particularly, are a great protein source.

Cold water fish are excellent for eating if you are wanting to battle depression. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all high in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that raise the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you fight depression.

Some grains are actually wonderful for fighting off bad moods. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all wonderful for helping you feel better. They help you feel full also which can truly help to improve your mood. Feeling famished can actually make you feel terrible! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are not difficult to digest. You digest these grains more quickly than other things which can help increase your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel happier, mood wise.

Your mood can really be helped by green tea. You knew green tea had to be included in this article, right? Green tea is rich in an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have found that this specific amino acid can basically stimulate brain waves. This helps improve your mental focus while relaxing the rest of your body. You probably already knew how easy it is to be healthy when you drink green tea. Now you know that applies to your mood too!

So you see, you don’t need to eat junk food or foods that are bad for you to feel better! Try a few of these suggestions instead.
