Turn to Food to Improve Your Mood

Many of us think that comfort foods are terrible for us and that we must keep away from them. Often, if your comfort food is a sugary food or some other junk food, this holds true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be completely nutritious and it’s good for you to eat them. There are several foods that basically can improve your moods when you eat them. If you seem to be a little bit down and in need of an emotional pick me up, try several of these.

Eggs, you may be amazed to learn, are great at fighting depression. Just be sure that you do not throw out the yolk. Every time you wish to cheer yourself up, the egg yolk is the most important part of the egg. Eggs, the egg yolks particularly, are loaded with B vitamins. B vitamins can truly help you boost your mood. This is because the B vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that affect how you feel). Try eating some eggs to jolly up!

Build a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, and so on are all great for helping to elevate your mood. This is possible as these foods are rich in magnesium which boosts serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that dictates to your brain how you feel at all times. The more of it you have, the better you are going to feel. Not just that but nuts, in particular, are a terrific protein source.

If you want to defeat depression, try consuming some cold water fish. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etc, they’re all chock-full of omega-3s and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that raise the quality and the function of your brain’s grey matter. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you fight back depression.

It’s easy to fight your bad mood when you are eating grains. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are excellent at helping you feel better. They can help you feel full for longer too, which is a mood improver. Feeling starved can really bring you down! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are not difficult to digest. They are simpler to digest than other foods which helps kick up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.

Green tea is truly great for your mood. You were sure green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea has a lot of an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have found that this specific amino acid can basically stimulate brain waves. This helps raise your mental sharpness while relaxing the rest of your body. You knew that green tea helps you feel healthier. Now you know that green tea helps you to raise your moods as well!

See, you don’t need to eat all that junk food when you want to feel better! Go with these tips instead!
