Use Food to Improve Your Mood

Many of us believe that comfort foods are bad for us and that we should avoid them. Sometimes, if the comfort food is candy or another junk food, this is true. Otherwise, comfort foods can be really healthy and good for you. Some foods actually do improve your mood when you eat them. When you feel a little down and are in need of an emotional boost, test out some of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly terrific at fighting back depression. Just make sure that you do not throw away the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most crucial in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, specifically the egg yolks, are full of B vitamins. These B vitamins are wonderful for helping to raise your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that affect your mood–run better. Try to eat an egg and feel a lot better!

Put together a trail mixfrom a variety of seeds and nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etc are all terrific for helping to raise your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have lots of magnesium which increases your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that dictates to your brain how you feel day in and day out. The higher your serotonin levels, the happier you will feel. Nuts, in addition to improving your mood, can be a superb source of protein.

Cold water fish are excellent for eating if you are wanting to beat back depression. Cold water fish like tuna, trout and wild salmon are rich in DHA and omega-3 fatty acids. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the grey matter in your brain. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can seriously raise your mood.

Some grains are really excellent for fighting off bad moods. Quinoa, barley, millet, etc are fantastic at helping you feel happier. They help you feel full also which can truly help to make your mood better. Feeling famished can be terrible! These grains can help your mood elevate because it’s easy for your body to digest them. You digest these foods quicker than other foods which can help promote your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel happier, mood wise.

Your mood can truly be helped by green tea. You were simply expecting to read that here, weren’t you? Green tea has a lot of an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid essentially stimulates brain waves. This will improve your brain’s concentration while at the same relaxing the rest of your body. You probably already knew it is not difficult to become healthy when you drink green tea. Now you know that green tea can improve your mood too!

So you see, you don’t have to turn to junk food or foods that are not good for you so you can feel better! Try some of these hints instead.
