Foods That Make You Happy
Many of us think that comfort foods are terrible for us and that we have to stay away from them. Sometimes, if the comfort food is candy or another junk food, this holds true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be totally nutritious and it’s good for you to consume them. There are several foods that actually can raise your moods when you consume them. If you are feeling a little bit down and in need of an emotional pick me up, try a number of these.
Eggs, you might be astonished to find out, are great at combating depression. You should see to it, though, that what you make includes the yolk. Whenever you want to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most important part of the egg. Eggs, particularly the yolks, are loaded with B vitamins. B vitamins can be fantastic for lifting up your mood. This is because the B vitamins increase the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that tell you how to feel). Try eating a couple of eggs to cheer up!
Put together a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all good for elevating your mood. This is possible because these foods are rich in magnesium which boosts serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical that directs your brain how you feel all the time. The more serotonin in your brain, the more pleasant you’ll feel. Not just that, nuts, in particular, are a fantastic protein source.
If you want to defeat depression, try consuming some cold water fish. Tuna, trout, mackerel, herring and wild salmon are all full of omega-3 fats and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that improve the quality and the function of your brain’s gray matter. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can seriously elevate your mood.
Grains can be excellent for overcoming a terrible mood. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are great at helping you feel better. These foods fill you up better and that can help elevate your moods as well. It’s not difficult to feel depressed when you are starving! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are easy for your stomach to digest. You digest these foods faster than other foods which can help boost your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel better, mood wise.
Your mood can actually be helped by green tea. You were just waiting to read that here, weren’t you? Green tea is found to be rich in an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid basically induces brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while at the same time relaxing the rest of your body. You were already aware that green tea could help you be better. And now you are aware that it can help improve your mood as well!
As you can see, you don’t need to consume all that junk food when you wish to feel better! Try some of these suggestions instead.
