Use Food to Elevate Your Mood

In general, people have been trained to think that “comfort” foods are terrible for the body and must be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is a high sugar food or another junk food, this is very true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be altogether healthy and it’s good for you to eat them. A number of foods honestly do improve your mood when you eat them. When you feel a little down and are in need of an emotional boost, try a few of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly terrific at fighting back depression. Just see to it that you do not toss the yolk. The egg yolk is the most important part of the egg in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, especially the egg yolks, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can really help you elevate your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–function better. Eat some eggs to cheer up!

Put together several trail mix of nuts or seeds. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all good for improving your mood. This is because seeds and nuts have a lot of magnesium which increases your brain’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” chemical substance that dictates to your brain how you feel all the time. The more serotonin you have, the happier you will feel. Nuts, along with elevating your mood, can be a great protein source.

If you want to battle depression, try consuming some cold water fish. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all rich in omega-3s and DHA. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can actually help you overcome your depression.

Grains can be excellent for driving away a bad mood. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all truly great for helping boost your happiness levels. These foods fill you up better and that can help elevate your moods as well. Feeling famished can really make you feel terrible! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are not hard for your body to digest. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.

Green tea is really good for your mood. You knew green tea had to be in this article somewhere, right? Green tea is high in a specific amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have discovered that this amino acid basically induces brain waves. This helps sharpen your mental energy while simultaneously relaxing the rest of your body. You knew that green tea helps you feel healthier. And now you know green tea can help you be happier too!

Now you realize that junk food isn’t necessarily what you should eat when you are wanting to help your moods get better. Try a few of these suggestions instead.
