Foods That Can Make Your Mood Better

For the most part, people have been trained to think that “comfort” foods are bad for the body and need to be avoided. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this is true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be altogether nourishing and it’s good for you to consume them. There are several foods that, when you eat them, can boost your mood. When you feel a little down and are needing an emotional pick-me-up, test out a few of these.

Eggs, you might be surprised to find out, are great at battling depression. You must make sure, though, that what you make includes the yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that is the most crucial in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, particularly the yolks, are loaded with B vitamins. B vitamins can be terrific for boosting your mood. This is because they improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Try eating a few eggs to cheer up!

Make a trail mixfrom a variety of seeds and nuts. Your mood can be raised by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. This is because these foods are high in magnesium, which helps to increase serotonin production. Serotonin is known as the “feel good” chemical and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The higher your serotonin levels, the more pleasant you will feel. Not just that, nuts, particularly, are a fantastic source of protein.

If you want to defeat depression, try consuming some cold water fish. Wild salmon, herring, mackerel, trout, and tuna are all rich in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that raise the quality and the function of your brain’s gray matter. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can basically help you overcome depression.

Some grains are actually excellent for fighting off bad moods. Barley, millet, quinoa, etc are excellent at helping you be happier. These foods fill you up better and that can help you with your moods too. It’s not hard to feel a little bit off when you feel hungry! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are not hard for your body to digest and process. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps kick start a rise in your sugar levels which in turn brings up your mood to a happier place.

Your mood can really be helped by green tea. You were just anticipating to read that, weren’t you? Green tea is found to be chock-full of an amino acid called L-theanine. Research has proven that this amino acid promotes the production of brain waves. This helps better your mental focus while having a relaxing effect on the rest of your body. You were already aware that that green tea helps you be better. Now you know that green tea can elevate your mood also!

You can see, you don’t have to turn to junk food or foods that are terrible for you to feel better! Try a few of these instead!
