How to Improve Your Mood with Food

A lot of us have been taught to believe that comfort foods are bad and should be avoided. Sometimes, if your comfort food is a high sugar food or another junk food, this holds true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be completely healthy and it’s good for you to eat them. There are some foods that, when you consume them, may improve your mood. If you are feeling a little bit down and you need a happiness pick me up, try a few of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be really great at beating back depression. Just see to it that you do not toss the yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the egg yolks in particular, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can genuinely help you boost your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–function better. Try eating an egg and be happy!

Build a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etcetera are all wonderful for improving your mood. This is because these nuts are loaded with magnesium, which helps to boost serotonin levels. Serotonin is referred to as the “feel good” chemical and it tells your brain how you should be feeling day in and day out. The more of it in your brain, the more pleasant you’ll feel. Nuts, on top of improving your mood, can be a superb protein source.

If you wish to battle depression, try eating some cold water fish. Cold water fish such as tuna, trout and wild salmon are rich in DHA and omega-3s. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that actually help the grey matter in your brain function a lot better. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight back depression.

Some grains are truly great for fighting off bad moods. Quinoa, barley, millet, etc are excellent at helping you be happier. They help you feel full as well which can really help to make your mood better. It’s not difficult to feel depressed when you feel famished! The reason these grains are so wonderful for your mood is that they are not hard to digest. You digest these grains more quickly than other things which can help promote your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel better, mood wise.

Green tea is truly good for your mood. You were sure it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea is rich in a particular amino acid called L-theanine. Research has discovered that this amino acid induces the production of brain waves. This helps improve your mental energy while at the same time making the rest of your body more relaxed. You already knew green tea could help you be better. Now you are well aware that green tea helps you to lift your moods too!

So you see, you don’t need to stuff your face with junk food when you are wanting to feel better! Try some of these instead!
