Discover How to Elevate Your Mood with Food

A lot of us have been taught to think that comfort foods are bad and should be avoided. Often, if your comfort food is a sugary food or some other junk food, this holds true. Otherwise, comfort foods could be extremely nutritious and good for you. There are some foods that basically can raise your moods when you consume them. If you feel a little bit down and need a happiness pick me up, try some of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be actually great at dealing with depression. Just see to it that you don’t toss out the egg yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping elevate your mood. Eggs, the egg yolks especially, are loaded with B vitamins. B vitamins can actually help you boost your mood. This is because the B vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–run better. Try eating an egg and cheer up!

Make a trail mixout of a variety of seeds and nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etc are all great for helping to boost your mood. This is possible since these foods are high in magnesium which promotes serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that directs your brain how you feel all the time. The higher your levels of serotonin, the better you are going to feel. Nuts, in addition to improving your mood, can be a great protein source.

Cold water fish are excellent for eating if you want to fight depression. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all high in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: consuming a tuna fish sandwich can greatly raise your mood.

Grains can be wonderful for driving away a terrible mood. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all excellent for helping you feel better. They help you feel full also which can really help to better your mood. It’s not difficult to feel low when you feel hungry! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are not difficult for your body to digest and process. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps promote a rise in your blood sugar which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.

Your mood could actually be helped by green tea. You knew green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is rich in an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies prove that this specific amino acid can essentially stimulate brain waves. This helps improve your mental energy while at the same time calming your body. You knew that green tea helps you feel better. Now you are aware that green tea helps you to elevate your moods too!

So you see, you don’t need to stuff your face with junk food when you are wanting to feel better! Try a few of these instead!
