How to Elevate Your Mood with Food

Most of us think that comfort foods are terrible for us and that we must stay away from them. If your comfort food is candy or junk food this is true. Other times, comfort foods can be utterly healthy and good for us to consume. A number of foods really do improve your mood when you consume them. If you are feeling a little bit down and need a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.

Eggs, would you believe, are great for helping you fight depression. Just see to it that you do not toss the yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that is the most important in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, the yolk especially, are stuffed full of B vitamins. B vitamins can genuinely help you raise your mood. This is because these vitamins improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Eat a couple of eggs to cheer up!

Put together a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, and so on are all great for helping to elevate your mood. This is because these nuts are high in magnesium, which helps to raise serotonin production. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that tells your brain how you feel all the time. The more of it you have, the happier you are going to feel. Nuts, on top of improving your mood, can be a superb source of protein.

Cold water fish are excellent if you would like to be in a better mood. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all loaded with omega-3 and DHA. These are two substances that boost the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can really help you fight depression.

Grains can be excellent for driving away a terrible mood. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all great for helping you be in a happier state of mind. They help you feel full also which can truly help to better your mood. It’s not hard to feel low when you are starving! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are easy for your stomach to digest. You digest these grains quicker than other things which can help increase your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel happier, mood wise.

Your mood can truly be helped by green tea. You were sure it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea is packed full of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies have discovered that this amino acid basically induces brain waves. This helps raise your mental focus while relaxing the rest of your body. You were already aware that green tea could help you feel healthier. And now you are aware that it can help you be happier also!

So you see, you don’t need to stuff your face with junk food when you are wanting to feel better! Test out these suggestions instead!
