Use Food to Elevate Your Mood
Mostly, people have been trained to believe that “comfort” foods are not good for the body and need to be avoided. However, if your comfort food is candy or junk food this can be true. At times, comfort foods can be perfectly nutritious and good for us to consume. There are a number of foods that really can boost your moods when you eat them. When you feel a little down and are in need of an emotional boost, try a couple of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, can be truly terrific at fighting back depression. Just make sure that you do not throw out the egg yolk. Whenever you want to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most vital part of the egg. Eggs, the yolks particularly, are rich in B vitamins. The B vitamin family can be terrific for lifting up your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that control your mood–function better. Try consuming a few eggs to jolly up!
Make a trail mixout of different seeds and nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etc are all great for helping to boost your mood. This is possible as these foods are high in magnesium which raises your production of serotonin. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical substance that directs the brain how to feel at any given point in time. The more of it you have, the happier you are going to feel. Not just that but nuts, specifically, are a fantastic protein source.
Cold water fish are great if you would like to feel happier. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, etcetera, they’re all loaded with omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that really help the grey matter in your brain work a lot better. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can seriously raise your mood.
Grains can be wonderful for driving away a bad mood. Barley, quinoa, millet, teff, etc are all wonderful for helping you feel better. They help you feel full too which can actually help to improve your mood. Feeling hungry can be awful! The reason these grains can improve your mood is that they are easy for your stomach to digest. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, elevates your mood.
Green tea is truly good for your mood. You were simply anticipating to read that here, weren’t you? Green tea has been found to be chock-full of an amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies show that this particular amino acid can basically stimulate brain waves. This helps raise your mental sharpness while having a relaxing effect on the rest of your body. You knew that green tea helps you become healthier. Now you are well aware that it helps you to lift your moods too!
Now you know that junk food isn’t necessarily what you need to eat when you wish to help your moods get better. Try some of these instead!
