Try Using Food to Boost Your Mood

Many of us have been taught to believe that comfort foods are terrible and should be avoided. But if your comfort food is candy or junk food this can be true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be totally healthy and it’s good for you to consume them. There are a number of foods that, when you consume them, may improve your mood. If you feel a little bit down and you need a happiness pick me up, try a few of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be actually wonderful at fighting back depression. You should make sure, though, that what you make includes the egg yolk. The yolk is the part of the egg that is the most crucial in terms of helping you cheer up. Eggs, especially the yolks, are full of B vitamins. B vitamins can really help you raise your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–work better. Try eating a few eggs to cheer up!

Put together a trail mixout of a variety of seeds and nuts. Peanuts, cashews, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera are all terrific for helping to raise your mood. This is possible as these foods are high in magnesium which raises serotonin production. Serotonin is a feel-good substance that directs the brain how to feel at any given moment. The more of this chemical in your brain, the happier you’ll feel. Not only that but nuts, particularly, are a great protein food source.

If you want to beat depression, try eating some cold water fish. Cold water fish like tuna, trout and wild salmon are high in DHA and omega-3 fatty acids. DHA and omega-3s are two things that improve the quality and the function of your brain’s gray matter. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can basically help you fight back depression.

It’s not hard to fight your bad mood when you are eating grains. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all really great for helping increase your happiness levels. They fill you up better and that can help improve your moods also. Feeling starved can actually make you feel awful! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are not difficult to digest. You digest these foods quicker than other things which can help increase your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel better, mood wise.

Green tea is truly excellent for your mood. You knew it had to be included in this article, right? Green tea is loaded with an amino acid called L-theanine. Studies have found that this particular amino acid can basically induce brain waves. This helps raise your mental sharpness while having a relaxing effect on the rest of your body. You already knew green tea could help you be better. Now you know it can help improve your mood as well!

As you can see, you don’t need to consume all that junk food when you are wanting to feel better! Try some of these suggestions instead.
