Use Food to Elevate Your Mood

Most of us think that comfort foods are not good for us and that we ought to stay away from them. Often, if your comfort food is basically candy or other junk foods, this holds true. Otherwise, comfort foods may be really nourishing and good for you. There are some foods that really can raise your moods when you eat them. When you are feeling a little down and are needing an emotional boost, test out a few of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be really wonderful at dealing with depression. Just be sure that you do not toss the yolk. When you wish to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most essential part of the egg. Eggs, the egg yolks especially, are high in B vitamins. These B vitamins are fantastic for helping to improve your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–function better. Try eating a couple of eggs to jolly up!

Put together a trail mixfrom a variety of seeds and nuts. Your mood can be elevated by consuming peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. This is possible because these foods are high in magnesium which promotes your production of serotonin. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical that tells the brain how to feel at any given point in time. The more serotonin you have, the better you are going to feel. Nuts, in addition to improving your mood, can be a super protein source.

If you would like to overcome depression, try consuming some cold water fish. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, and so on, they’re all loaded with omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can earnestly boost your mood.

Some grains are actually great for fighting off bad moods. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all great for helping you feel happier. These grains fill you up better and that can help improve your moods too. It’s not hard to feel low when you feel hungry! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are not difficult for your stomach to digest. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps bring up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, improves your mood.

Green tea is actually excellent for your mood. You knew green tea had to be mentioned, right? Green tea is rich in a certain amino acid called L-theanine. Research has found that this amino acid induces the production of brain waves. This helps raise your mental acuity while having a relaxing effect on the rest of your body. You probably already knew it is not hard to become healthy when you consume green tea. And now you are aware that it can help improve your mood also!

You can see, you don’t have to turn to junk food or foods that are not good for you so you can feel better! Try some of these instead!
